Why do I need a Driving Licence?

  • Riding on the road can potentially be dangerous if you have not had the correct training. You could be putting both your life and the lives of others at risk!
  • Therefore, to ride any motorised vehicle in the UK you will need a Driving Licence.
  • You can apply for one of these online by visiting www.direct.gov.uk or by picking up a driving licence application form (D1) at your local Post Office.

What are the different types of Driving Licences?

Here are the different types of driving licences, depending on your age and size of bike…

DrivingLicenceCategory P: (CBT Only)

  • Ride a bike designed to go no faster than 31 mph (50cc)
  • Minimum age 16
  • L-plates, displayed front and back
  • No motorways
  • No passengers
  • Hold a CBT (One day course that everyone passes, unless totally dangerous!)

Category A: (CBT & Full Licence)

  • Ride a bike up to 125cc, with a power output of 14.6 bhp, or less
  • Minimum age 17
  • No need to display L-plates
  • Can carry passengers
  • Hold a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) & Full Licence
  • Category A1: (CBT & Full Licence)

If aged 17 – 21…

  • Power output of 33 bhp, or a motorcycle combination with the same restriction.
  • CBT & Full Licence

If 21, or over…

  • Can ride any size motorcycle with, or without, sidecar.
  • CBT, Full Licence and Direct Access Test – or held Category A1 for at least 2 years.
